Jose Luis and Susan Parra have served with Youth With A Mission in Creel, Chihuahua, Mexico since August 1998. They, along with their daughter, Jaynie, serve God among the Tarahumara people of the Copper Canyon area in northern Mexico. Their ministry is three-fold: discipleship of Tarahumara Christians; evangelism in Tarahumara communities; and participating in Bible translation into the High Tarahumara dialect. Their vision is to see the Kingdom of God established in the hearts, families, and communities of the Tarahumara people and to see God glorified by all who live in the Copper Canyon area.

Parra Family Update

June 20, 2009

Thank you for your steadfast support of the Tarahumara people, our ministry, and family. We value your partnership and count it a blessing to represent you as we serve God among the Tarahumara people of northern Mexico.

We have made progress during the past 3 weeks on the script translation of the film “God’s Story” into Tarahumara. Jose Luis was able to devote many days during this time to revise and rewrite the script to make it fit into the limits placed by the God’s Story ministry. He is so very close to finishing the translation. However, we were just informed of a new step in the translation phase of producing a new language. We now need to do a back-translation from Tarahumara to English. This needs to be done by someone who has not worked on the translation before. We have asked Enrique, the young man from San Luis Majimachi who has been attending the DTS along with his wife Marianita, to do the back translation from Tarahumara to Spanish. Then we will need to find someone who can complete the back translation (from Spanish to English). Please pray that the Lord will continue to fill Jose Luis with His wisdom as he works to finish the translation of “God’s Story”. Please pray for Enrique to know how to express what he understands in Tarahumara into Spanish.

Jose Luis has not worked with the translation committee during the past 3 weeks; the committee met once during this time and continued their work in the book of Acts. The committee is scheduled to meet again the week of June 29th. Please continue to lift up the members of the committee (Martha, Giltro, Marcos, Martin, and Jose Luis); pray that they will be filled with the wisdom of God and with an urgency to see the Word of God translated into their dialect.

We are in the final days of our DTS – the students will graduate next Saturday, June 27. Please pray for them to continue to be sensitive to the Lord and His will for their lives. Pray especially for Enrique and Marianita as they return to San Luis Majimachi – pray that they will be able to put into practice all that they have learned during the past 6 months. Please pray also for the Heislers, who are the directors of this DTS, and for the Kaemingks, who are the directors of our YWAM base. Pray that they and all of the staff (Ricardo, Dwayne, and us) will be led into God’s perfect will for future schools and for future projects. We, as a base, are beginning to implement a new agriculture project in San Luis Majimachi, and would appreciate your prayers for long-term support of this community project.

Finally, we have continued to go to San Luis Majimachi for discipleship classes on Saturdays. Please pray for the Christians as they struggle with leaving behind the former ways and adjust to living lives wholly devoted to the Lord Jesus Christ. Pray that we would have wisdom and discernment to help the Christians mature in their faith. Also, please continue to pray for the community of Los Manzanos – pray for a hunger for righteousness and for the truth of God. Pray for Jose Luis to know exactly what to teach and for us all to be able to share Christ’s love in effective ways.

Thank you so much for your prayers and support. We appreciate you. May the Lord bless you with His wisdom as you lift up these requests to Him in prayer.

In Christ’s Love,
Jose Luis, Susan, & Jaynie
